This is 5B #1888. It was broken at the wrist and restocked. It is now getting a second wrist repair (welded rather than brazed this time) and a second new stock. It should be finished in about six weeks.

New stock by Keith Kearcher, engraving by Ron Collins on trigger bow from DML #1017.

I'll have to try again on the engraving. It really does not show well in my photos!

Terry, You've aquired some really beautiful cross-bolts in addition to your great resurrected sideplate Optimus! Very fine stock work on the 5B. Congratulations!

Terry, I think the 5B Lefever engraving is just perfect for the gun. Sort of like the Grade 5 L C Smith engraving being just right for that gun. Congrat's on your restoration. It's a lovely job. Do take some photos that show the engraving and carving better. Maybe indirect light and no flash . Wonderful Oh, you got the drop points just right.

Beautiful work. Is 1888 a Defiance or Bowling Green gun? Being a straight grip, how do you determine the grade? When you add more pics, could you include one of the buttplate as I have not seen what the originals look like.

Here is a better photo of the action and cheeks of the stock. The butt plate will follow in a day or two, and maybe I can get the trigger bow, too. However, since it is not factory engraving, it may confuse viewers.

Identification of the grade of this gun was by comparison of its engraving with another grade marked 5B gun. Both have two dogs per side and virtually full action coverage with engraving. I hope having these images available will help others identify DML guns as they are found.

New stock is by Keith Kearcher, engraving by Ron Collins.
